GOLDSMITH, James, died Feb. 20 1837, age 77, Soldier of the Revolution James was the son of James Goldsmith (d. 8 Dec 1795, Milford, CT) and Rachel Collins (d. 5 Nov. 1787, Milford, CT). Born in Connecticut in 1759. Died in Portland, Chautauqua County, N. Y., Feb. 20, 1837. Grave in Portland Cemetery. Enlisted from Connecticut Feb. 14, 1777, as Sergeant under Capt. Chas. Pond, Col. Return Meigs. Second enlistment under Capt. Asa Lay, Col. Heman Swift. Third enlistment in 1780 under Capt. Phelps, serving until June, 1783. Moved to Portland, Chautauqua County, N. Y., in 1830. ** his wife was Susannah ROGERS daughter of Benjamin and Esther Rogers (based on reported estate records in the Milford Co., CT genealogy book). Benjamin d. Jan. 1777 and his widow Esther d. Feb. 1777.
