Mrs. Steward Sheldon Has Passed Away

Mother of De. Charles M. Sheldon Succumbs to Illness
Mrs. Stewart Sheldon, mother of Dr. Charles M. Sheldon, died Sunday night at her home 1506 West street. The immediate cause of death was heart failure though Mrs. Sheldon was suffering from a complication of diseases. In fact it has been three years since she began to fail and during that time she has lived quietly and has seldom ventured from home. Within the last few weeks, however, she became afflicted with a severe throat trouble which as it developed bore evidences of becoming diphtheria and about a week ago she was compelled to keep to her bed. A few hours before she died she became unconscious and passed away quietly and without suffering. She was 74 years of age.

The funeral will be held this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Topeka cemetery. A short service will be conducted by Dr. Norman Plass, president of Washburn college, at the grave and there will be no other service as the home is quarantined.
The doctors say, however, that there will be no danger to any of the friends who wish to attend the services at the grave. Interment will be in the southwest part of the new cemetery.

Mrs. Sheldon is survived by her husband, the Rev. Stewart Sheldon, who is her senior by 3 years, and five children, Mrs. M.A. Waterman of Kansas City, Mrs. Oscar Dodds of Evanston, Ill., Miss S.P. Sheldon of Topeka, Mr. H.W. Sheldon, official surgeon at the iron mines at Negaunee, Mich., and Rev. Charles M. Sheldon.

Mrs. Stewart Sheldon before her marriage was Miss Sarah Ward. She was born at Perry Center, N.Y., where she was married at about the age of 25 to the Rev. Stewart Sheldon who was then a young minister at that place. Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon moved to Silver Creek, N.Y. It was at this place that their oldest son, W.H. Sheldon, was born. Later they went to Wellsville, the birthplace of Charles M. Sheldon. After holding pastorates in Rhode Island, Michigan and Missouri, they moved to the new territory of Dakota where the husband became a pioneer missionary preacher. During their 15 years' stay in Dakota Rev. Stewart Sheldon was superintendent of the Congregational work in that territory and he was the organizer of over 100 pioneer churches. In the same capacity he later did the same kind of work among the frontier mining settlements in Colorado and made several trips to South America in behalf of the work.

Through all his arduous labors and privations Mrs. Sheldon was faithful and bore her full share as his helpmeet. During their declining years Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon have lived in Topeka where they have taken a deep interest in the labors of their son Dr. Charles M. Sheldon in the great work he has done both in his church and as an author of many books on religious teachings. Mrs. Sheldon was a favorite with the members of the Central Congregational church and was dearly beloved and revered by all who knew her. Dr. Sheldon bears the death of his mother and lifelong companion and advisor with cheerfulness and according to his philosophy that she has passed on to a higher life where he expects to join her.
