Ralph M. Bateman. 83, a resident of Fredonia, died Monday Dec. 3, 1991, at Fredonia Regional Hospital.

He was born at Hollow, Okla., Feb. 4, 1908, the son of William N. and Martha E. (Barnett) Bateman.

On May 22, 1936, he married Mary Alice Trimmell at Benedict.

Mr. Bateman began his 43-year career as an educator in Crestline, Kans., coming to Coyville in 1932. He was a teacher, coach and administrator with Unified School District 484 in Fredonia from 1937 to 1971.

Many of his summers were spent working with young people in a recreation program he organized and served before and after the program was supported by public funds. The 1957 and 1971 Fredonia High School yearbooks were dedicated to Mr. Bateman. In 1986, the high school gymnasium was named Bateman Gymnasium to commemorate his years of service to the community.

He has earned both his bachelor's and master's degree in education from Pittsburg State University. He had been inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia for more than 50 years. He was a member and past president of the Fredonia Rotary Club and had been named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a life member of the National Education Association (NEA) and the Kansas NEA. He was a life member of the Pittsburg State University alumni association and a university foundation member.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice, of the home; one son, Dr. Kenneth Bateman of Pittsburg; one daughter, Erma Beeson of Naperville, Ill.; four grandchildren, James Beeson of Dallas, Tex, Ann Beeson of Atlanta, Ga., Kebra Bateman of Lenexa and Tess Bateman of Washington, D.C.; one great-grandson, Brandon James Bateman of Dallas.

He was preceded in death earlier this year by his grandson, Ralph Shaun Bateman.

Services are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 13, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia. Rev. Jerry Quiring will officiate. Burial will be in the Fredonia City Cemetery under the direction of the Timmons Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, Dec. 12, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Pittsburg State University Foundation, Ralph Bateman Scholarship.
