Johnnie Ballew, 84, of Plainview, Texas, passed away Sept. 22, 2011.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church with Kyle Brock officiating. Interment will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home, with full honor guard provided by the Plainview Fire Department. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday evening at Lemons Funeral Home.

Johnnie Dale Ballew was born March 22, 1927, in Wingate, Texas, to Joe Clyde and Verdie Ballew. He married Kazuko Izumi (Kay) on March 18, 1952, in Tokyo, Japan. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Plainview. He had resided in Plainview since 1948 and served the City of Plainview as a police officer, fireman, assistant fire chief and director of municipal safety and environment, and director of the Emergency Operation Center over the course of 30 years. He was an assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 255 from 1968-1974 and was inducted into the Scout Hall of Fame in 1992. Johnnie was also a member of the State Firefighters Association. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy in WWII and the Korean War. He enjoyed woodworking and appliance repair.

Mr. Ballew is survived by his wife, Kay Ballew, of the home; four sons, Michael Joe Ballew and wife Patsy of Abilene, Texas, Mitchell T. Ballew and wife Ruth of Waco, Texas, Bobby D. Ballew and wife Bess of Plainview, Texas, and Dale A. Ballew and wife Joan of Plainview, Texas; one sister, Oneta Faye Wherry of Montclair, N.J.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Clyde and Verdie Ellis Ballew.
