Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 148th New York Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 38th United States Colored Troops. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". After the war he served as United States Consul in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 1871 to 1873.
