"Fred Shuford Smith, age 68, long-time Coleman resident, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at Oakridge Nursing Home, Brownwood. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin Forrester officiating. Burial followed at Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

"Fred Shuford Smith was born December 4, 1929 in Cameron, Texas, a son of the late Jefferson Lyle Smith and Myrtle Dolly Carlton Smith. He grew up in Shields and Santa Anna and attended school at Bowen and Santa Anna. Mr. Smith served with the National Guard for 32 years and was employed for 15 years at the Brownwood State School. On July 6, 1974, he married Gladys Mae Barkemeyer in Coleman. She preceded him in death on October 26, 1992. He was a Protestant.

"Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Barkemeyer Lane of St. Paul, Minnesota; one son, William Barkemeyer of Blackwell; three brothers, Harold Smith of Mason, Jesse Smith of Harker Heights and J. L. Smith of Midland; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

"Pallbearers were Robert Trammell, Sherman Smith, Darrell Hunter, DuWayne Hunter, Terry Smith and Ricky Smith."
