Tom Hickey was the next door neighbor and friend of Knute Rockne, the legendary head football coach of the University of Notre Dame. Tom was Rockne's godfather when Rockne converted to Catholicism on Nov. 20, 1925 at the Log Chapel on Notre Dame's campus. Hickey was a well known contractor in South Bend, Indiana and built more than 30 buildings on the Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College campuses.

Services for Thomas L. Hickey Sr., prominent South Bend businessman and civic leader who died Thursday at the age of 80, were held today in Sacred Heart Catholic Church on the University of Notre Dame campus.

Rev. Charles M. Carey, CSC, offered the mass. Burial was in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park,

Hickey, who resided at 1004 St. Vincent St., was president and board chairman of Thomas L. Hickey Inc., a contracting firm established by his father in 1895.

Many South Bend buildings were constructed by Hickey's company, including most of St. Mary's College buildings, many Indiana and Michigan hospitals, and about two dozen structures at the University of Notre Dame.

Hickey was a director of a variety of business and civic organizations, including the Rotary Club, Indiana Club, former Assoc of Commerce, Contractors Assoc, St. Joseph Bank & Trust Co. and the St. Joseph County Department of Public Welfare. He was a former member of the board of trustees of the South Bend Redevelopment Department.

Memorial contributions may be made to the scholarship fund at the St. Joseph Valley Notre Dame Club.
