OBITUARY
Russell Clarence Riggen
Russell Clarence Riggen, the son of John Clarence and Mary Elizabeth Montgomery Riggen, was born May 13, 1907, in Sullivan County, west of Milan, and died Oct 16, 1981, at St. Lukes Hospital in Kansas City, where he had been a patient the past week. He had been in failing health for several months.
On August 18, 1935, at Milan, he married Lenore Tittle, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Larry Shelton of Columbia; one grandson, Scott Russell Shelton of Columbia; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Floren and Mary Thompson of Portales, NM; two nephews, Floren and Ben Thompson of NM; one niece, Susan Harding, of NM; three cousins on his father's side and 13 cousins on his mother's side.
Mr. Riggen was preceded in death by his father, State Senator, J. C. Riggen, his mother, and several aunts and uncles.
Mr. Riggen was a lifelong resident of Milan and community. He was a 1926 graduate of Milan High School and attended North East Missouri State Teachers College. He taught in rural schools of Sullivan County for three years and for three years was an instructor of the 8th grade in Milan.
He served with the U. S. Army during World War II, where he was assigned to the 173rd General Hospital Unit in France. In 1931 he joined his father in the paint and wallpaper business. In 1932 he attended the Williams Institute of Embalming at Kansas City and following his schooling he opened the Riggen Funeral Home, which he has owned and operated until his death. He was looking forward to receiving his 50-year certificate as a member of the Missouri Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association this coming spring.
He was a member of the Milan United Methodist Church, where he had served as a member of the official board for several years. He was also a member of the Seaman Lodge No. 126, A.F.& A.M; the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Moila Shrine Temple in St. Joseph; Eastern Star Chapter No. 65 at Milan, American Legion Post 226 of Milan; Milan Lions Club and Milan Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Missouri Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. For several years he served as a member of the Milan Board of Education and was also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Milan. He was a friend and advisor to many in his community.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 19, 1981, in the United Methodist Church in Milan, with the pastor, Rev. Larry Linville officiating. Masonic services by Seaman Lodge A.F. & A.M. were held at the church. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Milan with Military Rites at graveside by American Legion Post 226.
Casket bearers were Robert Knell, Gerald Wade, O'Garlan Ricks, J. O. Mudd, Alvin Stormer, Harold B. Wright, John Newton Comstock and P. K. Payne. [The Milan Standard, Milan, MO, 22 October 1981, Sect. 3, p. 7, col. 2 & 3]
