The third son of George Pellew, the Dean of Norwich Cathedral, and Frances Addington, he was the grandson of Edward Pellew,1st Viscount Exmouth. Henry Pellew inherited the title of Viscount Exmouth when his cousin, Edward Pellew, 5th Viscount Exmouth, died without descendants in 1922. Henry died less than six months later, and he was succeeded in his titles by his younger son Charles Pellew.
Although born and educated in England, he moved to New York in 1873 shortly after his second marriage and lived there until 1888. He then moved to Washington, D.C. where he carryied out charitable works for the rest of his life.
