Mr. Birkhofer had farmed in Muscatine County. He married Elizabeth Marolf.
He enjoyed fishing as a hobby.
A memorial fund has been established.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Fred) Brammier and Judy (Mrs. Ed) Nesbit, both of Wilton; a son, James J., Moscow; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Willard) Smull, Wilton; Norma (Mrs. Gerald) Chambliss, Tipton; and Lois (Mrs. Denzel) Coram, Muscatine; and a brother, Nevin, Muscatine.
