Hiram was born in Elkhart, In and moved to Topeka, KS, in 1898. During the time he resided in Topeka, Hiram worked as a machinist for the Santa Fe Railroad for 18 years. The last twenty years of his life, he operated a general repair shop at his home. In the 1930 census, he listed himself as a blacksmith.
His obituary, dated 27 May 1940, p. 7, of the Topeka Daily Capital, states that he was survived by his wife, Abbie, two daughters, Mrs. Lon Henderson of Albuquerque, N.M., Mrs. Eleanor Bennett of Topeka and a son, Jess Willard DeCamp, also of Albuquerque. The obituary also mentioned eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
