Walter C. Smith, 81, of Esko, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born in Terra Haute, Ind., on June 4, 1923 to Sidney and Anna (Barnum) Smith. Walter was a proudly decorated veteran of World War II, having valiantly fought for his country in the Battle of the Bulge. Walter was united in marriage to Elsie Despot on Feb. 12, 1942. He retired from US Steel having worked for 32 years as a millwright in the powerhouse. Walter enjoyed spending time with his loving wife of 62 years, Elsie, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a lifelong love of fishing, and also found deep enjoyment in creating laughter within his family. Walter is preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Elsianne Smith-Townsend.

Elsie Dorothea Smith, 84, of Esko, passed into peace, surrounded by her family in St. Luke's on Dec. 15, 2007. She was born in Duluth in 1923. Elsie was a deeply loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family always came first. She had a wonderful sense of humor that touched all who knew her. Elsie is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Walter who died tragically in 2004; daughter, Elsianne Townsend; son-in-law, Elroy Gauthier; parents, Tom and Tilly Despot; six brothers and infant sister.
