Born in Zwötzen bei Gera, Thuringen, German Empire; son of a saddler, Heinrich Christian and Ernestine Auguste (Schuster) Friedrich, married Christine Muttenthaler, September 06, 1914, San Francisco, California.
-----Hermann was born on September 7, 1875 in Gera, Germany. He left Germany as a young boy, age 14, and went to England and Scotland. At 16 he left Glasgow, Scotland for Cleveland, Ohio, where he learned about slaughter houses and how to become a butcher. He became a U.S. Citizen on April 10, 1900 in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 24. He went west to San Francisco, California and then became chief butcher on ships sailing between San Francisco and Australia. He met and married Mama (Christine Muttenthaler) in San Francisco in 1914. Alfred was born there (S.F.) on June 26, 1915. Then they moved to Richmond, California in 1916, where Papa owned and operated the Lily Meat Market. Papa was a charter member of a men's German singing group, The Mannerchor. Herman and Walter were born in Richmond, California, Herman on December 28, 1916, and Walter on April 8, 1919. Then the family moved to Brentwood, California where Papa had another butcher shop. Gertrude was born in Brentwood on September 16, 1920, and the following year Mary was born on December 10, 1921. When Mary was three months old, the family moved to Tracy, California. Here Papa owned and operated The Central Meat Market until the depression in 1929. Papa worked for the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) during the Depression. He died of throat cancer on December 31, 1936 at the age of 61. -- Mary Oakley
