Mr. Aaron "Red" Rice Matney, 79, of Lexington passed away Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Aaron was born July 4, 1932 in Wyoming County, WV a son of the late John and Maude Cook Matney. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Mary Francis Matney; two sons, Aaron Rice Matney, Jr. and Gary Matney; and ten brothers and sisters.
Aaron was a carpenter by trade. He could build anything he was determined to build. Mr. Matney was a member and former deacon of Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Lexington. He loved his church, reading his bible, and his family; A Godly man devoted to God and his family. Aaron is a veteran of the US Army. On February 12, 2004 he married Linda Gilmore Matney, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are four children, Mary Ann Couch and husband, Allen of Oceana, WV, Marina Matney of Trinity, Luther "Luke" Matney and wife, Anna of Wallburg, and Joey Matney of Trinity; step son, Tony Gobble and wife, Candace of Thomasville and step daughter, Kenda Somero and husband, Michael of Trinity; two sisters, Susie Sadwin and husband, Arnold of NJ and Naomi Smith and husband, Bernard of GA; two brothers, Billy Ray Matney and wife, Karen and Joseph Booten Matney and wife, Phyllis all of MI; 11 grandchildren, 11 step grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 2 pm Wednesday, September 21st at Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, 335 Lee Smith Road, Lexington, NC with Pastor Jeff Walser officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 20th from 6 until 8 pm at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.
