Ophie Dean Davis was born February 23, 1911, in Potosi, TX, to the home of Effie May and Andrew J. Badgett and died September 18, 2011, in Lovington, NM, where she had been living for the past few years with her son and daughter-in-law. Mrs. Davis grew up in the Badgett Community near Stanton, TX, and attended the Badgett School. On June 16, 1927, she was married to Robert Vernon Davis under a tree on the courthouse lawn in Midland, TX. During their married lifetime they lived in several communities, but for a number of years in Hereford, TX. She cooked in several local cafes there. After her husband's death in 1971, Mrs. Davis moved to Bovina, where she cooked for several years in the school cafeteria. In early 1980, Ophie moved to Portales to be where her children were, and for a short time, she cooked at the New Mexico Christian Children's Home.
Mrs. Davis was a faithful member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ for as long as she lived in Portales. She enjoyed her church life as well as quilting and crocheting. She had made many beautiful quilts and other handmade mementos which her children and grandchildren enjoy. Having cooked for a living for so many years, she was also an excellent cook.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Paul, Delbert, and Hester Badgett; three sisters, Della, Irene, and Ora Nell; two sons, Elvis and Hilton Davis and by her husband, Vernon who died November 30, 1971.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, 575-356-4455.
