DONALD J. ANHORN a native of North Dakota and a long-time resident of Castro Valley, passed away March 10, 2008 at age 73. Loving husband of 50 years to Elizabeth, beloved father to daughter Judy Mathews and her husband Tom of Castro Valley, and grandchildren Scott and Nicole, son Jeff Anhorn and his wife Renee of Livermore and grandchildren Janelle, Michael and Nicholas, and son Rich Anhorn and his wife Amanda of Houston, TX, and grandchildren Grant and Reed. Dear brother to Ann Brandt, Alice Prokop, and Delores Yonker. He will be missed by his sister-in-law Virginia Ghezzi, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces and many dear friends. Don proudly served in the Navy on the USS Missouri during the Korean War. He was employed by Yandell Truckaway for 31 years and retired in 1988. For many years he was active in coaching in Hayward Continental Little League. Upon his retirement he devoted his energy to his life-long passions of hunting and fishing, taking him on countless excursions throughout his adopted state of California, and many trips to Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and along the West and East Coasts. He was a treasured companion of his fellow sportsmen as a member of the Nor Cal Skipper's Club and Coastside Fishing Club, and was also a member of Hayward YMI. Don and Liz enjoyed their travels throughout North America and Europe. Papa was devoted to his grandchildren's numerous school and sports activities, which brought much enjoyment to his life. Don's love of life, his laughter, and his natural ability to connect and communicate with people will forever be remembered by everyone he met and truly will be missed. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, March 17th at 10:30 am at All Saints Catholic Church, 22824 Second St., Hayward, CA. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, 1710 Webster St., Oakland, CA 94621, Pathways Hospice, 7901 Oakport St., Suite 3500, Oakland, CA 94621, or All Saints Church Maintenance Fund, 22824 Second St., Hayward, CA 94541, or to the charity of your choice.
