Fortunatus Cosby (FC) Gwathmey was one of the children born to Temple Gwathmey and his wife Ann (Nancy) Meriwether Marks. FC was a life-long resident of Louisville, Kentucky, who was employed as a steamboat clerk/captain.

FC was united in marriage in 1839 to Isabelle "Belle" Lyons, who was born in Ireland. FC and Belle were blessed with the birth of at least three children during their marriage:

Owen Gwathmey
John T. Gwathmey
Annie M. Gwathmey Cunningham

FC passed away at the young age of 48 years old. Belle relocated to Memphis, Tennessee where she lived with her son John T. until she passed away in 1891.
