This community was totally unprepared for the announcement, Wednesday morning of
the death of Robert Clinton Bassford, he had been on the streets and at work as
usual on Tuesday, and comparatively few of his friends had heard of a sudden
illness late Tuesday evening which ended fatally a few hours later. He was at
work on Tuesday on one of the new Ney buildings at the north end of town, and
while on the scaffold just before 6 o'clock he was taken very suddenly with what
was later pronounced to be a congestive chill. He was assisted to the ground and
started to walk home. He had gone but a short distance when he became entirely
helpless and sank to the ground. Assistance was promptly at hand, and he was
conveyed to his home on Gorman Street, where he died shortly after midnight.

Mr. Bassford was the oldest son of Thomas Bassford, a well-known citizen of the
town. He was born May 18, 1850, and most of his life was spent in Harrisonburg.

He was a prominent member of the Harrisonburg Guards, having been one of the
charter members of the organization and it’s Orderly Sergeant for a number of
years. He also belonged to the fire department and one of the most active
members of the German street Hose Company. In February, 1887, he married Mrs.
Thelia Thompson, nee Allen, who survives him.

Besides his aged parents, the deceased leaves three brothers and one sister—Mrs.
Jos. Haynes—who are residents of Harrisonburg, and two other sisters, Mrs. Mary
Ancarrow, of near Richmond, and Mrs. Cornelia McCulloch, of West Virginia.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist
church. Rev. Mr. Cruikshanka will officiate.

The military and fire companies will attend in a body. Several beautiful floral
pieces have been ordered by the various organizations to which the deceased
belonged.
