Son of John Douglas and Annie Laurie Cates, husband of Linda Barnes.

MONTGOMERY - Van Warren Cates, SMSgt (Ret.), passed away on September 17, 2011 at the age of 69 at a local hospital. Van was born on February 17, 1942 to John and Annie Laurie Cates, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Barnes Cates; three children, Holly Mundy Carter (Ken), Michael Mundy and Rob Mundy; two brothers, John (Betty) and Joe Cates; and 1 grandson.

Van was proud to serve many years with the Air National Guard, from which he retired in 2002. He was an avid golfer, musician, gardener, landscape artist, and loving husband and father.

Pallbearers will be David McCutchin, Ben Wood, Brannon Cates, Spencer Cates, Brad Cates and Kirk Chandler. Honorary pallbearers are the Robert E. Lee Class of 1960.

Funeral services will be at Leak-Memory Chapel, Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with burial and Military Honors following in Greenwood Cemetery.
