Mrs. Julia Rogers passed away suddenly at her late home on Western Avenue, Tuesday morning, August 7th, at the age of 81 years. She was one of a large family of children born to Eben and Philadelphia Carter Drake of Horicon, N.Y. On July 3, 1866, she was married to Silas Rogers at Schroon, N.Y. Their early married life was spent in New York. Later they moved to Richford, then to Coventry, where her husband died twenty-three years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Rogers were both members of the Advent Christian Church of Newport Center when it was first formed at the Hoyt Schoolhouse.
Mrs. Rogers was a good mother and spent her life unselfishly in caring for the family of eleven children. Three of her sons, William E., Silas E., and Orville H., died in childhood, and a daughter, Rose L. (Durkee) died in Danville in 1929. A son, Samuel Rogers, of Rochester, N.H., was crushed to death in a gravel pit last winter while he was at work.
She is survived by her children, James S. Rogers of New Toronto, Ont.; Mrs. Archie Maxfield of Irasburg; Mrs. Lenora Allen, Charles, Elmer, and John H. Rogers, all of Newport, and Mrs. Alice I. Gibson, who for many years has faithfully cared for her aged mother. The grandchildren to mourn her death are Mrs. Julia Rexford and Howard Allen, of Newport; Mrs. Eugenia Wilkins, New Toronto, Ont.; Marguerite and James Rogers, White Plains, N.Y.; Clarence Rogers and Misses Verna, Marjorie, Pauline, and Shirley Rogers of Rochester, N.H.; Miss Geraldine Maxfield, Irasburg. Her great grandchildren are Rachel Rogers of Brattleboro, Eleanor, Marion, Arlene, and Betty Rexford, and Master Howard Allen of Newport.
The deceased also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Martha Bennett and Mrs. Charlotte Smith of Horicon, N.Y.
The funeral was held at the Advent Christian Church, Newport. Rev. Craig Wilcox of Newport Center officiated. Two of her favorite hymns, "Rock of Ages," and "Some Times We'll Understand," were sung by Mrs. Asa Thayer and Miss Rena Brown. The profusion of floral offerings showed the esteem in which she was held by her relatives, neighbors, and friends. She was laid to rest beside her husband in the cemetery at Coventry.
Card of Thanks:
We wish to express our sincere thanks to our friends and neighbors, for their many acts of kindness during the sickness and death of our beloved mother, also for the beautiful flowers, and to all those who loaned cars or helped in any way.
