Born in NY, Alonzo was the eldest of the 3 children born to Royal and Ellen (Harris) Bartlett. His siblings were Charles, and Cynthia Maria, both his parents died when he was very young. His mother Ellen died when he was only 5 years old. After Ellen's death, Alonzo's father Royal Bartlett remarried, this time to a Jane Miller, together they had two daughters, Agnes who died as an infant and Frances A. Bartlett. After Royal's death, the 3 children from the 1st marriage became homeless. Alonzo joined the Civil War as a Private, Union side, New York 35th infantry, Company I. After the war he and his brother Charles moved to Woodbury County, Iowa. He had received a land grant (homesteaded) from the U.S. Government and became a farmer. He also became a member of the Iowa G.A.R. Alonzo was married 3 times while living in Iowa. His first marriage was in 1869 to Ellen Elizabeth Nellie Bassett, together they had one son named Howard (1881-1954). His second wife's name was Betsy Livermore Turman, they married in 1898, together they had one son named Glenn (1902-1969). His final marriage was to Myrtle (Dicus) Coleman, together they had three son's, Robert Lavern (1917-1996), Harold Wayne (1918-1963), and Leonard Ray (1921) who died as an infant. Alonzo's 2nd & 3rd wives were 1st cousins. Living on his Civil War pension, his final years were spent in Devil's Lake, N. Dakota living with his son Howard, and his daughter-in-law Ethal. Ethal was his caretaker. According to his war records, he had lived with a life time of health issues due to injuries he received during the Civil War. He died at home.
