Margaret M. 'Marge' Schmitt, age 91 of Johnsburg, IL passed away peacefully on November 18, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 11, 1931, in Fremont Center, IL to John and Laura (Tekampe) Hertel on the family farm.

She married the love of her life, Stanley Schmitt on November 4, 1950 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fremont Center, IL. Together they raised six children on the family farm in Johnsburg, IL and considered their family their greatest accomplishment. She filled the home with love, laughter, delicious home cooking and cookie jars that never went empty. Many spirited games of euchre were played with family and friends through the years. Stanley and Marge were married for 60 wonderful years until Stanley's passing in 2011.

Marge was a devout Catholic and instilled her faith in her family. She was active with the National Catholic Society of Foresters, Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality, and the Bereavement Ministry at church. Always a willing volunteer with a joyful and generous spirit at the many Christmas craft shows, rummage sales and parish picnics. She was honored as St. John's 'Catholic Woman of Inspiration' in 2015.

Marge and Stanley loved to travel, making many lifelong friends along the way. She especially enjoyed their summers 'up north', winters in Florida and baseball games (Cubs/Cardinals) in St. Louis.

Marge was loved beyond measure and remains in the hearts of all who loved her. She is survived by her loving children, Larry (Ann) Schmitt and Loren (Colleen) Schmitt, Barbara (Rick) Mack, Janice (Roy) Piatt, and Patti Schmitt, daughter-in-law Mary Schmitt, sister Rosella Ullrich, and sisters-in-law Dolores Hertel and Judy Hertel. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Cortney (Adam) Fowles, Kyle Schmitt, Todd (Anna) Schmitt, Adam Schmitt, Kevin Schmitt, Carly (fiancé Jackson VanHarte) Schmitt, Ashly Schmitt, Trevor (Stephanie) Mack, Desiree Piatt, Leslie (Brian) Hug, and Brad (Jenny) Pasko; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Zac Schmitt, Kylee Schmitt, Henry and Charlie Fowles, Hudson and Ella Mack, Isabelle Schmitt, Asher and Isaac Fortney, Mason and Brady Hug, Lukas and Levon Pasko.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley, son Duane, infant daughter Mary, brothers Aloysius (Fran) Hertel, Otto Hertel, and Paul Hertel, sister Rose (Ken) Buchardt, and brother-in-law Chester Ullrich.

Marge's family would like to extend a special thank-you to Bev Nick for the friendship shown to our mother over these past few years and to the special caregivers at Burr Oaks Manor for their compassion and care for her over this past month.

Visitation will be held at Colonial Funeral Home in McHenry on Monday, November 28 from 4:00pm – 7:00pm and resume again from 9:30am until the 10:00am funeral mass on Tuesday, November 29 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Johnsburg, IL.
