SAILOR LAD SUCCUMBS
Walter Rickert, 1917 Recruit, Victim of Pneumonia at Newport
Unusually sad was the announcement received at Honesdale Thursday that Walter Rickert died of pneumonia, May 23, in the hospital of navy training station at Newport, Rhode Island. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Rickert of Indian Orchard , being the first Wayne county parents to make the sacrifice of a son among this years enlistments. In response to the message received Tuesday, the mother, accompanied by an older son Louis and daughter Eugenia, left for his bedside, but he was unable to recognize them. The young man had a siege of measles, prevalent there at present, and went to the hospital, May 12. He was apparently recovering nicely when pneumonia developed., death claiming him late Wednesday night. Walter was born at Indian Orchard nearly sixteen years ago. He was very large for his age, weighing 132 pounds and easily passed for the age limit when enlisting in Scranton with other Honesdale boys on April 17, 1917. After attending the district school, Walter came with his parents to Honesdale, where he assisted in the confectionery store and for several months was a clerk in the Grand Union tea store. Deceased was a polite manly fellow and won many friends by his kind, courteous and genial manner. He was a member of the German Catholic club. Surviving, beside his parents are the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Wm. Wulff (Elizabeth) of Halstead; Mrs. Jos. Herzog (Rose) of Honesdale; Misses Vera, Eugenia and Eleanor at home; Louis of Hawley; and Julius of Honesdale. The latter went by auto to Carbondale Thursday evening to meet the members of the family returning from Newport. The remains were expected to arrive at Honesdale on the evening train Friday and will be taken to his parents home at Indian Orchard. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary Magdelen church by the rector, Rev. L. C. Schmitt, at 3:30 Sunday afternoon and will probably be conducted in accordance with militiary arrangements, Walter being the frist recruit from these parts to answer the final summons.
