Royce "Bud" Hawpe, of Crowley, a retired salesman, died Saturday at an Albuquerque, N.M., hospital. He was 67.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Hawpe was born in Joshua and grew up in Fort Worth. He was a graduate of Paschal High School and lived in Crowley for 25 years.

He entered the Army Air Forces and was a staff sergeant and an engineer-gunner on a B-26 Marauder in the 9th Air Force during World War II. His plane was shot down over Germany and Mr. Hawpe was taken prisoner on Feb. 22, 1945. Until his liberation in April 1945, he had been looking for his brother, John Hawpe, also a gunner who was taken prisoner in May 1944 after his B-24 was shot down over Belgium. The brothers finally met in a camp in France after they had been liberated and returned home in June 1945. John Hawpe died about five years ago. Among decorations Royce Hawpe received was the Air Medal.

He entered the food business after leaving the service and retired from Beatrice Foods about 15 years ago. He was a Presbyterian.

Survivors: Wife, Betty Hawpe of Crowley; three sons, John Hawpe and Richard Hawpe, both of Fort Worth, and Randy Hawpe of Burleson; daughter, Cinda Weatherly of Crowley; mother, Beulah Hawpe of Fort Worth; brother, Don Hawpe of Joshua; two sisters, Lucille Adams of Fort Worth and Louise Jones of Joshua; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
