On 21 Mar 1862, RW enlisted in Co. C, 3rd regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry by Capt. E. Smart for a term of 3 years. RW was promoted to 6th Sergeant. His military records state that he was 5'8", light complexion, grey eyes, light hair, occupation farmer. He was listed as "Absent sick at hospl [sic] at Ironton Mo." in April of 1864, and absent with leave in Aug of 1864. On 22 Dec 1864 he was taken prisoner of war at Centerville, Reynolds Co., MO, in the southern part of the state. He was recaptured on 25 Dec 1864 and discharged 25 Mar 1865 in Macon, Missouri.
RW married Margaret Ann Hemphill on 18 Jan 1866 in Pike Co., Missouri. The family migrated to Warren Co., IL and by 05 Aug 1870, had moved on to Jasper Co., Iowa in a group that included his parents. They traveled by covered wagon. He lived in Jasper Co., IA for the rest of his life with his wife and children.
Children include Ella V. b. 1866, who d just 5 months before her father, John w. (1868-1870), Charles H. (1869-1870), an infant (1870-1870), and Lily G, b. 1872.
