Joseph was born in 1797 in Wythe County, Virginia to Michael Cormany, Jr. (1774-1853) and his wife Barbara Reusch Cormany (1777-1850). His paternal grandfather, Michael Cormany, Sr. (1745-1828), had immigrated to America through Philadelphia with his parents in 1751, and was originally from Edenkoben, Germany. He married Catherine Musser around 1825, and they had the following children: Lucinda (1827-1888), Mary Ann (1830-1910), Mahlon S. (1831-1898), and Elizabeth (1836-). Their son Mahlon would later become my 3rd great-grandfather through his son Alanson.
