The Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers (1910) indicates that James Beeks was born in Indiana and was a twenty-seven-year-old resident of Delhi when he enlisted on August 15, 1862, in what would be Company K of the 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The company was mustered in on August 23rd and the regiment on September 9, 1862. Their early service was in Missouri and they were in Hartville on December 2nd when they started a return to Houston at 7:00 a.m. They were in Houston on January 21, 1863, when James was discharged from the military on a surgeon's certificate of disability. In a postwar affidavit, Alexander Voorhees, Captain of Company K, explained that James had been unfit for duty since December 2nd "for the reason of a injury received by a tree falling on him while on duty in pioneer company on the march from Heartsville to Houston, Mo.
