MAJOR THOMAS PATTON ADAMS, JR.

Major Thomas Patton Adams, Jr. (10 Feb 1836 Pulaski, TN - 9 Feb 1901 "Hazelwood," Shelby Co., TN) was the youngest child of Thomas Patton Adams, Sr. (1796 Ireland - 1841 Pulaski, TN) and Ann Tennant (1799 Scotland - 1857 Pulaski, TN).

Thomas Sr. was the son of Nathan Adams (1768 Ireland - 1816 PA) and Martha Patton (1768 Ireland - 1864 Nashville, Davidson, TN).

Patton, Jr. and his brother, Gen. John Adams (1825-1864), killed at the Battle of Franklin in 1864, served the Confederacy in the War Between the States.

Following the Civil War, Patton Adams, Jr. moved to Memphis and was successful in the cotton commission business. He married Mary "Molly" Elizabeth Bragg on 3 Dec 1867 at "Hazelwood." Molly, daughter of Henry Allen Bragg and Frances Ann Armistead, graduated from the Florence Synodical College in Alabama. (see Armistead and Bragg)

Patton and Molly lived in Memphis but, "as their family increased, they thought the children should have growing room." They moved to Hazelwood in 1871 where the children grew up. "Near the turn of the century the three oldest boys, Sterling, Henry, and Crockett, left home to work for William R. Moore Dry Goods Company. They continued with this firm the remainder of their lives." (Cowles' Manuscript) Edward remained and farmed the land. The three daughters taught school. Many in the family are buried in Chambers Chapel Cemetery, Lakeland, Shelby County, Tennessee.

"HAZELWOOD"

In 1857 Molly's parents, Henry and Francis Ann Armistead Bragg, purchased a 312 acre plantation near Arlington. They built a large home that accommodated many of the family in 1870: 1) Frances Bragg and four of her children, 2) Henry A. Bragg's sister, Isabella Sweet, and her husband, Dr. Fred T. Sweet, and 3) Molly and Patton Adams and their family. Frances served as hostess until her death in 1879. Molly Adams served in that capacity until her death in 1924.

After Molly's death her son, Edward, and his wife, Patsy, bought "Hazelwood." Love, responsibility, education, hospitality, and a strong work ethic were associated with "Hazelwood" by the Bragg and Adams family for 130 years. Fire destroyed the home, and all family memorabilia, twice over the years. Mary Ormond Adams Cowles' Manuscript paints a delightful picture of the family's life at "Hazelwood" from the mid-nineteenth century. (Memphis Room of the Public Library and Shelby County Archives) The land was sold in 1986.
