Irene (Baca) Wilson was born September 9, 1917 in Orange Grove, Texas, the eldest of four children to Herman and Louise Baca who moved to this small town from the Czech area of East Texas. Her parents were devout Catholics, and religion was a very important part of their daily lives. The family often went to several Sunday Masses at which Mom and her mother sang. Her father had a small farm, but making a living was most difficult during this time. Irene's father became a veterinarian through a correspondence course and also operated a chicken hatchery. These two endeavors proved to be successful. Her childhood was typical of that era - helping her mother with household chores and in the hatchery. As she got older, Irene helped take care of her three brothers. Irene completed grade and high school and also took voice lessons. She was invited to participate in a recital in Corpus Christi singing her favorite
song "Whispering Hope". Irene did very well, but finances prevented her from pursuing a singing career. She spent summers picking cotton and also worked at an uncle's café.
In August of 1938, Irene fell in love and married Joe Wilson. She and her husband lived in Orange Grove and then in Boerne becoming parents of three children. Joe received a job offer from the Missouri Pacific Railroad in San Antonio eventually becoming a locomotive engineer. He retired after 31 years with the railroad. Joe and Irene were blessed with three more children. With a family of six children, Irene was a homemaker and wife devoted mother and involved with school and church activities.
When Joe retired from the railroad in 1975, he and Irene bought a 7 acre lot in Center Point and built a modest home there and enjoyed their life socializing with their neighbors and church friends. Of course their home became the magnet of countless family gatherings (birthdays, holidays, and family reunions, etc). Irene was an excellent cook all of her life and her bread, dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls were "to die for". Irene was the happiest when she was cooking for the family and working outside with her flowers. Irene and Joe enjoyed eight years in Center Point before Joe passed away in August 1983. Irene moved back to San Antonio in 1985 and bought a garden home in Honey Hill where she lived until 2007. She continued to have family gatherings until she was 90 years old. Irene immersed herself into volunteer work visiting nursing homes and becoming involved in numerous church organizations and activities at St Luke Catholic Church. Irene also enjoyed crafts and is famous for her pine cone wreaths which still grace all of the family's and friends' homes here and across the United States, Canada and even in Ireland.
Irene and Joe's family has grown to include 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Irene is truly the matriarch of the Wilson Family passing on her Catholic faith and values to all of them and over the years became a mentor to many of the younger generations.
Irene moved to Newforest Estates Assisted Living in August 2007 and then a few years later to Morningside Manor. Irene carries her trademark beautiful smile wherever she goes and lights up a room when she enters. People are drawn to her simply because she is so happy and pleasant. The love of God shines forth from her. Irene has always accepted whatever life handed her. Her strong will and devout faith in God never waivered.
Irene's family loves her and cherishes her long life knowing they are richly blessed!
Mrs Irene Wilson is survived by two daughters, four sons and spouses; Basil and June Wilson of Comfort, Katherine and Elmer Green of San Antonio, Theresa Wilson of San Antonio, Jodie and Alma Wilson of Cuerro, Pat and Brenda Wilson of Schertz, Mark and Suzy Wilson of Boerne, 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving, brother, Edmund Baca of San Antonio and sister in law, Mrs Leo (Kathy) Baca of Robstown.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, October 20th at 5pm in the St Luke's Catholic Church, San Antonio with a Rosary Service at 7pm.
