Albert Shaw was the son of Dennis and Emeline (Skinner) Shaw, and brother of William B., Charles D., and Henry Shaw, all of whom served in Co. D, 18th Mass. Infantry.

Albert was a 20 year-old Shoemaker from Middleboro, MA, when he enlisted at Middleboro, MA on May 20, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. D. He is confirmed as having engaged with the Regiment in 1862 in the following actions: the Siege of Yorktown, the Peninsula Campaign, including Williamsburg and Fair Oaks; Second Bull Run; Antietam, Shepherdstown, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was one of ten men of Company D cited for their courage at the battle of Fredericksburg, fought on Dec. 13, 1862. In 1863 Albert was further engaged with the 18th Massachusetts at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, and Mine Run. In 1864, he was further engaged at the battle of the Wilderness, Laurel Hill, Spottsylvania Court House, North Anna River, Shady Grove Church, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church, and the siege of Petersburg. Albert was mustered out of military service on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.
