Obituary from "The Edna Sun", October 30, 1930:

MRS. JOHN RHODES DIED TUESDAY

WAS A PIONEER MOTHER OF KANSAS, HAVING LIVED HERE OVER HALF CENTURY

Was Mother Of Ten Children, Eight Of Whom Still Live To Mourn Her Passing

Again, we are called upon to chronicle the passing of one of the early settlers of this particular part of Labette county. Coming here with her young husband in the seventies they shared the hardship which were many with the other settlers who came from other states to make homes on the prairies of Kansas. For over a half century she had made this community her home and the humble and good people her associates. She loved her home and her children, making many sacrifices in their behalf and in turn the children were very devoted to their mother. A good mother, friends and neighbor has gone to her last rest.

Alice M. Kelley was born near Canton, Ohio April 9, 1852 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Cooper on October 28, 1930. Aged 78 years, 6 months and 17 days.

On July 11, 1868, at Robertsville, Ohio, she was united in marriage to John W. Rhodes. To this good and faithful mother and her companion in life until June 28, 1927, were born 10 children, eight of whom are still living. They are Irvin Rhodes, Mrs. S. W. Triebel, Mrs. Frank Cooper and Harry Rhodes of near Edna, Mrs. Mae Baldwin of Long Beach, Cal., Charles Rhodes of southern Texas, Mrs. Ernest Hambleton of Sasakwa, Okla., and Mrs. Clyde Tilton of Nowata, Okla. One daughter, Jennie (Rhodes) Staige passed away Februay 8, 1892 at the age of 22 years and the eldest son, A. G. Rhodes died in California two years ago. After a companionship of more than forty years, the husband and father departed this life June 28, 1927.

Many years ago she united with the United Brethern church at Trenton but late years has been a member of the Methodist church.

The funeral took place from the Frank Cooper home in the Trenton community on Wednesday, Oct. 29, Rev. Frank S. Ditto, a former pastor of the Edna M.E. church preaching the funeral discourse. Interment in the north Edna cemetery. All of the children were present at the funeral except one son, Charles of Texas.
