His daughter Ellen Fleetwood McElrath Morris wrote a brief letter (posted on familysearch.org) regarding an inheritance from Hugh's father to be paid in 1899 to her and her brother John Edgar. "Our father Hugh McD. McElrath died in Oct 1863 and our sister Susie died in March of 1878, leaving my brother and myself as the only surviving childen of our father...." In addition, a story in The Daily Register (Knoxville, Tennessee) on 21 May 1862 Page 2 reports the announcement of May 13, 1863 of H. McD. McElrath as a "suitable man to represent us in the next Congress, Col. H. McD. McElrath." (posted on familysearch.org) He died in 1863. The headstone is not correct, and this evidence is first-hand.
