She earned her Bachelor's degree at DePauw University and a Master's degree in Education at Long Island University. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1944, she married Richard (Dick) A. Stark and became a Navy wife for 2 years. Following WWII, Barbara and Dick moved to Long Island, NY where they lived mostly in Garden City and Centre Island-Oyster Bay for 42 years.
In 1990, they retired to live full- time in Vero Beach, FL, having previously owned a beach condominium there. Barbara was a wonderful wife, superb homemaker, and a loving and devoted mother, raising five highly successful children. She also started two nursery schools and served as a grief counselor at Community Church in Garden City and at Community Church of Vero Beach.
In Vero Beach, Barbara was active, beginning in the early 1980's, in the founding, funding and operations of the (now) Vero Beach Museum of Arts. She served a term as Chairman of the Museum's Community Committee (now Friends). She was active in the Community Church of Vero Beach, where she and Dick were members for some 25 years. Barbara enjoyed worldwide travel, bridge as a Life Master, and extensive charitable activities, including her service at the Museum and at the Riverside Theatre. Her interests included music, theater and oil painting, and she was a voracious reader. She was passionate about women's rights and, at various times, was active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Planned Parenthood in Garden City and in Vero Beach.
