Christena Jane Mather (heading) Died at the home of her son, Perry Mather, on Friday, August 18, 1916 at 10:30 p.m., Mrs. Christena Jane Mather, one of the early settlers of Stafford county.
Christena Jane Lee was born in Decatur Co. Indiana, Nov. 26, 1841. Her parents moved to Iowa in 1854, and here grew to womanhood. On July 29, 1869, she was married to Samuel Mather. To this union was born one son, Perry Mather. She with her husband and son moved to Kansas in 1876, coming in the spring of 1877 to Stafford (county), near Leesburg, where they settled and with the exception of a few years' stay in Oklahoma made this her home until she was called away to her eternal abode.
Her husband, Samuel Mather, died on May 2nd, 1882, leaving her to care for herself and her son.
She was converted while a young lady and united with the Methodist church. In later years she joined the Baptist church and to the time of her death lived a faithful, earnest member. She was kind and faithful in all her dealings and was loved by everyone who knew her. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.H. Briggs at the Leesburg church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of relatives and her remains were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery near by.
In all her suffering she was patient and uncomplaining. She will be greatly missed in the home, in the church and among her friends.
