John Hammond was born in 1789 in Wilkes County, Georgia to John Hammond Jr and Barbara Ann Ehler Hammond. He was 5'6" with black hair and eyes, and stout build.

On about August 25, 1813, he enlisted at Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia to serve as a Private in Captains John Harris' and Ware's Cos GA Militia. He was discharged on March 4, 1814.

He married Hannah Jane Dodson on 19 August 1818 in Jasper County, Georgia.

John and Hannah moved to Cherokee County, Alabama, where their first daughter, Elizabeth Hammond was born.

John and family moved to Autauga County, Alabama by 1830. By 1840, they were back living in Cherokee County, Alabama. They are also found on the 1850 Cherokee County, Alabama census. John and family were residing in Talladega County, Alabama in 1860.

His wife, Hannah Jane Dodson, died in July 1862.

John married Elizabeth T Belcher Bynum, widow of James Bynum, on 7 December 1864 in Talladega County, Alabama.

John's residence in 1866 and 1867 was in Talladega County, Alabama. John and Elizabeth moved to Clay County, Alabama by 1870.
