Greene County Hertiage Book Pages162/3 - written by H. Andrew Smith

" Thomas Henry "Tommie" Smith was born ca 1816 in Cracker's Neck, Greene County,Georgia, the second son of John "Jack" or "Jackie" and Mildred "Milley" Hightower' Smith. He grew up in the "Big House", John and and Milley's plantation home. On November 19, 1840 Thomas married Emily A. Perdue, duaghter of Daniel Perdue and his first wife, and Rebecca Houghton Perdue. Emily A. Perdue Smith died before April 22,1847, the date of Thomas' second marriage to Patience F. Smith, daughter of James Smith (SR), and his first wife Rebecca Win(g)field Smith. Patience herself the widow of her first hushand, William Gray Smith. in this complicated set of Smith to Smith marriages, Thomas Henry Smith and William Gray Smith were first cousins, but Patience's family of Smith's were not kin to the Reuben Smith family to which her two husbands belonged.
Thomas Henry Smith was active in the Methodist church, and in public affairs in the years after his marriage to Patience, serving as a Justice of the Peace from 1853-1860. Too old to volunteer for the army during the War Between the States,in 1861 he joined with other older Greene County men to help the families of indigent soldiers. After the war, in failing health,Thomas continued his interest in public affairs, serving as an officer of the Bryant Lodge, and supporting the growing temperance movement. In 1873, Thomas was appointed a Commissioner for the Poor in District 162. Thomas died relatively young, October 10,1874, in White Plains, leaving Patience and six minor children. Thomas Henry Smith fathered at least two children by Emily A. Perdue Smith."

"Foster D. Smith b ca 1873-may have served as Postmaster in Greensboro in 1918, the family tradition is that Foster D. Smith "died sometime before Joe and Hallie (Joseph Branson "Joe" Smith and his wife, Hallie Elizabeth Turner Smith) married, which was on August 14,1930. He comminted suicude in Washington,DC'- did his involvement in the postal system lead him to be in Washington,DC- had he been transfered there unwillingly?- unfortuntely, the people who could have answered this question have all gone on."
....

Henry William Smith was lost to the family. His story came back into the picture thru the kindness of a stranger.Henry and family lived in Atlanta, then Memphis, and finally in Florida. This kind stranger in Memphis, Tennessee contacted a Smith relative after finding Reuben A. Smith, Sr. and Mary A. Hines Credille Bible in an older home once lived in by Henry. However, his headstone reads Henry Wynn Smith born 1870. I believe the stone is most likely correct since, he was not part of family lore for many years. However , who knows- people do change names/dates for many reasons.Mistake on records?stone? but I am fairly sure his grave is correct person due to BD/ and wife's unusual name.Gail Hannah 47186089
