Frederick E. "Fritz" Bateman, 89, of Marion, died Friday, September 14, 2007, in St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by Rev. Robert Kunz. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife Ellen (Ross) Bateman; twin daughters, Sue (Bob) Pehkonen and Sara Bateman; three grandchildren, Adriane (Mike) Miller, Aaron Hartmann, and Jennifer Hartmann; seven great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Pearl Potter, Eva Williams, Gertrude Smith, Laura Peck, Wilma Van Natta and Margaret Bateman; and three brothers, Henry Bateman, Donald Bateman and an infant brother.
Fritz was born March 17, 1918, the son of George and Mary Zerbe Bateman. He married Ellen Ross on August 14, 1948, in Vinton, Iowa. He was a self-employed plastering contractor for 20 years and then worked in maintenance for St. Luke's Hospital for 23 years. Fritz first served in the Army and then served in the Coast Guard during World War II.
He was a member the Marion Legion, the Marion Lodge No. 6 the Scottish Rite, the El Kahir Shrine and he was a 32nd Degree Mason.
