Dr. Gerald De Jong, 79, of Orange City died Tuesday, October 30, 2001, at his son's home in Rock Rapids.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. The Rev. Dave Sterk officiated. Burial with military honors was held at 1:30 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Gerald Francis was born November 16, 1921 at Carnes, the son of Otto and Hattie (Douma) De Jong. He graduated from a country school in 1935, and in 1939 he graduated from Northwestern Academy in Orange City. In 1942 h enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a navigator's assistant on the USS G.O. Squire for three years, bringing and returning troops in both the Pacific and European Theaters of Action. Gerald then attended Northwestern Junior College, graduating in 2948. He spent a year at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and then attended Morningside College in Sioux City, graduating with high honors. He then attended the University of Wisconsin to do graduate work in European History.

On June 5, 1952, Gerald was married to Jeanette "Jean" Masselink of Edgerton, Minn. In 1952 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, and graduated with Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1955, receiving the highest honors given in the history department.

AFter graduation Dr. De Jong taught European History at Indiana Central College, Emporia Kansas State College and North Dakota State College in Fargo, N.D. For five years he served as Academic Dean at Northwestern College in Orange City. Upon resuming teaching, he taught at Midwest College at Denison and the University of South Dakota at Vermilion, S.D. In 1988, Dr. De Jong retired to Orange City. He was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne of Orange City; six children, Owen De Jong of Wakonda, S.D., Dr. Jerry De Jong and his wife Dr. Renee of Urbana, Ill., Drew De Jong and his wife Janet of Spring, Texas., Dr. Nanette De Jong of New Brunswick, N.J., Dr. Chet De Jong and his wife Mel of Rock Rapids and Karl De Jong and his wife Kristal of Spring, Texas; seven grandchildren, Antoine, Colette, Audrey, Kristen, Max, Luke and Emily; two sisters, Ethel Aberson of Orange City and Betty Lou Alberts of Grand Forks, N.D.; and a brother, Thomas De Jong of Alton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Esther Muilenburg. A brother, Tom De Jong died on Wednesday, October 31, the day after Gerald died.
