Pioneer Woman Passes Away
Mrs Sarah E.Cofer,who made her home with Mr and Mrs F.L.Dawson since the death of her husband two and a half years ago, died last Friday night at the home of Mr and Mrs Floyd Galloway,whom she had been visiting for a few days. She was in her 92nd year. Funeral services were conducted Sunday morning at 10 o clock in Oak Ridge Church, Rev. J.S. Eames officiating,and burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.
Sarah E. Cofer was born Jan 29,1835 on a farm near Smith Chapel. Her parents were John A. and Elizabeth M. Thomas, who settled there in an early day coming from Kentucky to this state. Her mother died when she was quite young and she afterwards made her home with her uncle, A.M. Thomas, who reared and educated her. At the age of 18 years she began teaching and followed this calling through the civil war and long after, teaching in all for a quarter of a century. Being a rebel sympathizer, she had many thrilling experiences during the war period.
She was married to James E.Cofer Sept 9,1873. One child was born to them, dying in infancy. Mr Cofer died Sept 16,1923.
When quite young Mrs Cofer united with the Baptist church, Bro Luck being her 1st pastor. She was a daily reader of the bible, never missing a day reading a chapter, And following her conversion had read the bible through once each year. In 1875 she became a member of Oak Ridge Baptist church.
Mrs Cofer's exact age was 91 years,3 months and 17 days. She was remarkably active for one of her age and had enjoyed good health all winter. Her final illness was of brief duration. She was well as usual until about noon Thursday when she complained of chilliness and it was noticed that her mind was wandering. Late that afternoon she fell as she was walking from one room to another and possibly suffered hemorrhage of the brain. She lived until about 10:30pm Friday,apparently suffering but little in her last hours.
