Doit L. Biggs

Doit L. Biggs, 87, of Westfield, IL, passed away at 8:12 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County, IL. He was born February 15, 1924, the son of Roscoe L. Biggs and Emma B. Lashbrook Biggs. On January 1, 1944, he married Elnor M. Uncapher in Lafayette, IN.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Elnor Biggs of Westfield, IL; son, David D. Biggs and his wife Terri, of Westfield, IL; son, Robert D. Biggs and his wife Deborah Sims, of South Lee, MA; sister, Janice Hawkins of Casey, IL; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Elnor Jane Biggs and Lee Ann Biggs; brothers, Lee Biggs and Dale Biggs, and sister, Leola Richards.

Doit was attending Indiana Central College in Indianapolis as a promising scholar and athlete when World War II broke out. He returned to Westfield to manage the family farming interest. He retired in 1989, turning the farming over to his sons, David and Robert. Doit was a life long farmer and resident of the Westfield, IL community. He served several terms on the Westfield School Board. Doit was a member of the Westfield United Methodist Church, where he was active in the men's group and taught the high school Sunday school class for 30 years. He was a lay speaker and was instrumental in the unification process of the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist churches in 1968. In recent years, Doit and Elnor sponsored projects to preserve the old Westfield College church bell and to restore the 1917 pipe organ at the church.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at the Westfield United Methodist Church, Westfield, IL with Rev. Walter Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Street Cemetery, Casey, IL. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the Church.
