Asahel was the third of eight known children born to Gideon Hollister and Esther Case of East Glastonbury, Connecticut. He was a soldier of the Revolution, and the following entry is found in "The Official roster of the soldiers of the American Revolution buried in the State of Ohio":

"Served from Conn. in Capt Elijah Wright's Company, Col Roger Enos' Regt, stationed on Hudson River at West Point in 1778. He was a pensioner. Br [born] 1763, D[ied] Feb 12, 1839 Kirtland, O. Bur. Waite Hill Cem. Left Methodist Church and joined the Mormons..."

Asahel was married in East Glastonbury (called Eastbury) on 2 December 1787 to Elizabeth Weir who was born in CT about 1765. He appears on the 1790, 1800, and 1810 federal census reports for Glastonbury, CT, but in 1820 and 1830 he was in Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont, living with his wife. On 4 March 1831 his pension began for his revolutionary war service. On 13 December 1833 he was placed on a Bennington Co., Vermont pension roll, being called a Private, with annual allowance of $50.77 and sums received to date of $152.31.

Shortly after this pension report he moved to Kirtland, in Lake County, Ohio, and died within a few years. His widow, Elizabeth, appears on the 1850 census in Kirtland, aged 85, and living with a Lepasa Hollister, aged 58, born CT, and Henry Hollister, aged 14, born in Ohio. Asahel was buried in the Waite Hill Cemetery, but his marker is lost.
