HOWARD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph (Gladys) Foos, 64, Mitchell, will be at 2pm Thursday at the Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at Mitchell. She was born Dec. 12, 1908 at LeMars, Iowa, to Mr. and Mrs. George Simpson and died Nov. 12 at a Sioux Falls hospital. On Oct. 9, 1928 she married to Joseph Foos at Howard and they farmed near Roswell until moving to Mitchell in 1971. Survivors include her widower; one daughter, Betty Foos, Sioux Falls; two sons, Frank, Liberal, Kan., and Ben, Grand Island, Neb., and seven grandchildren.

Spearfish, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery, Mitchell. Gladys E. Simpson was born Dec. 12, 1908 at Le Mars, Iowa, to Mr. and Mrs. George Simpson. She was married to Joseph Foos on Oct. 9, 1928. They farmed until 1971 near Roswell and at that time moved to Mitchell. Survivors include her widower, Joseph, Mitchell; one daughter, Betty Jo Foos, Sioux Falls; two sons, Frank, Liberal, Kan.,
and Ben, Grand Island, Neb.; six granddaughters and one niece. Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon and Thursday until the service at the Willoughby Funeral Home.

Christian Kern was Joseph's great grandfather, and Gladys' grandfather. Joseph and Gladys were half first cousins once removed.
Joseph was a descendant of Christian's first marriage and Gladys was a descendant from Christian's second marriage.
Gladys' mother (Mary Catherine Kern) and Joseph's grandmother (Sophia Kern) were half sisters.
That means their children had Christian as both their great, AND great great grandfather.
