Rear Admiral Walter Whipple graduated from Annapolis, Class of 1926. Awarded the Silver Star for his actions as the Gunnery Officer on the USS Denver during WWII in the Solomon Island the night of March 5, 1943. Details available on line.
Died May 7 in a San Ramon hospital. Mr. Whipple was born in Sinclare, La., and lived in Arnold for 20 years before moving to Murphys nine years ago. He served in the Navy from 1926 to 1956. Mr. Whipple retired as a rear admiral.
He was a member of Calaveras Big Trees Association and Friends of the Library. Mr. Whipple was a charter member of the American Association of Retired Persons and Calaveras Community Telvision.
Widower of Marian Leighton Whipple. Children Walter Leighton Whipple, Roby Craibe, Margaret Oda.
