Death Of Lieut. Kenneth Roehr Over Gemany Is Confirmed

Plymouth - The death of Second Lt. Kenneth Roehr, co-pilot of a B-17 who was reported missing in action on a mission over Germany last June, was confirmed by the war department in a telegram received Sunday by his mother, Mrs. Lydia Roehr, 708 Reed street. Tex of the official communication follows: "Report now received from the German government through the International Red Cross states that your son, Second Lt. Kenneth Roehr, who was previously reported missing, was killed in action over Germany June 20." Subsequent word was received by Mrs. Roehr reporting that three other members of the crew were taken prisoner by the German government, after the plane Lt. Roehr was piloting was shot down on a raid over Hamburg. Lt. Roehr enlisted in the air corps in June, 1942, and was called into active service in January, 1943. After receiving basic training at Nashville, Tenn., he attended schools at Maxwell Field, Ala.; Souther Field, Ga.; Cochrane Field, Ga.; Moody Field, Ga.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Rapid City, S. D. and Kearney, Neb. He received his wings and flight officer rating while at Moody Field on Dec. 5, 1943, and obtained his commission as second lieutenant while stationed in England. He had been overseas since April, 1944, and participated in his first mission over Germany on June 1. The lieutenant was born on June 7, 1924, in town Rhine, the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Roehr. At the age of three, he moved to Plymouth with his family where he attended the public schools and graduated from the high school with the class of 1942. While in high school he was active in football and basketball and he was elected captain of the football squad in his senior year. He was also a member of the high school band and the Plymouth Municipal band, and an active member of the Evangelical and Reformed church at Plymouth. Survivors include in addition to his mother, three brothers, Edgar, Plymouth; 2/C MM Gilbert in the South Pacific, and Yeoman 1/C Lester Roehr, stationed with the coast guard at Dubuque, Iowa; three sisters, Seaman Virginia Roehr at the U.S. Naval hospital, Brooklyn, N. Y.; Mrs. Harold Becker, Sheboygan, and Miss Lucille, Roehr, at home, and his fiancee, Miss Delia Rossini, Plymouth. Reburial services for 2nd Lt. Kenneth Roehr, who was killed in action on June 20, 1944, over Hamburg, Germany, and whose body arrived in Plymouth Tuesday, were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wittkopp Funeral home, Plymouth. The Rev. H. G. Schmid of Sheboygan and the Rev. Otto Menke, supply pastor of the Salem Evangelical and Reformed church, Plymouth, officiated and burial was made in the Woodlawn cemetery. During the services Miss Geraldine Lemahieu and Mrs. Ray Deicher, accompanied by Mrs. Elsie Stransky, sang "In the Garden" and "Abide With Me". Pallbearers were Dario Rossini, Norbert Sternitzky, Gordon Minch, Frank Klug, Lewis Becher and Robert Bohnhoff. Veterans of Foreign Wars, Plymouth, conducted military rites at the grave. Relatives and friends attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Winter, Mr. and Mrs. William Hhiedeman, Kiel; Miss Virginia Roehr, Milwaukee; Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. Lester Roehr and daughters, Cleveland, Ohio, and others from Sheboygan, Plymouth and vicinity.
