Harold Edison Whitener, 81, of Burke County Road, Hickory, died May 29, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born May 24, 1920, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Fred and Grace Ashebranner Whitener. A member of Royal Chapel Church of God, he retired as a traffic manager from Johnson Supply Company. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theatre. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Carroll Huffman. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Townsend Whitener; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Mary Whitener of Greenville, S.C., and David and Peggy Whitener of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Glenn Rhoney of Cookesville; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Jim Leatherman of Hickory; two grandsons, Jeffrey and Tracie Rhoney of Hickory and Kevin and Nikki Whitener of Easley, S.C.; and four granddaughters and three grandsons-in-law, Sandra and Andy Towery of Vale, Janice and Joey Tucker of Chesnee, S.C., Wendy and Jay Earley of Flower Mound, Texas, and Julie Whitener of Charlotte. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. John Petty at 2 p.m. Thursday at his church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Hickory Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight. Memorials may be made to Royal Chapel Church of God, 7190 George Hildebran Road, Hickory, N.C. 28602.
