Bonnie Townsend Whitener, 91, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Frye Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. Bonnie was born Dec. 2, 1919 in Georgia to the late Otis and Mary Etta Lail Townsend. Bonnie was a member of Royal Chapel Church of God and retired from G.C. Murphy Company. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Whitener; a daughter, Phyllis Whitener; and nine brothers and sisters. Surviving are two sons, David Allen Whitener and wife Peggy of Lewisville, Texas, F. Gene Whitener of Greer, S.C., a son-in-law; Glenn Rhoney of Vale; four granddaughters, Sandra Towery of Vale, Janice Tucker of Moore, S.C., Wendy Earley of Flower Mound, Texas, Julie Sherman of Lewisville, Texas; two grandsons, Jeffrey Rhoney of Hickory, Kevin Whitener of Easly, S.C.; and a brother, Otis Townsend Jr. of Hickory Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Royal Chapel Church of God with the Reverend David Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 8, 2011 from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. at Royal Chapel Church of God.
