GOESSEL — Orlando H. (Orie) Schmidt, 88, passed away on Tuesday (Sept. 6, 2011) in Topeka.
He was born on Dec. 6, 1922, in Hillsboro, the son of Henry H. and Agnes Nickle Schmidt. He had been a farmer in the Goessel area for many years and a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church and later Southern Hills Mennonite Church in Topeka.
On May 14, 1951, he married Erna Duerksen.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Erna Duerksen Schmidt; his six children, Beverly (Nelson) Schmidt of La Mirada, Calif., Yvonne (Galen) Unruh of Topeka, Barbara (Nelson) Banman of Topeka, Charles (Kathy) Schmidt of McPherson, Emily (Keith) Blackburn of Topeka, and John (Debbie) Schmidt of Montgomery, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Miller-Ott Funeral Home in Goessel.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church Cemetery, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. The Rev. Steven Schmidt will officiate.
Memorials may be sent to either Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church or Southern Hills Mennonite Church, in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, 303 E. Main St., Goessel, KS 67053.
