Miss Rachel Doty was born February 23, 1825, in Marshall county, West Virginia, and died at the home of her son, J.N. Smith, March 23, 1915. She was married to John Smith in 1847. Eight children were born to this family, four boys and four girls, seven of whom are living. Rev. J.N. Smith of Pratt, Phebe J. Biddle of Morgan, Colo.; John D of Avandale, Colo.; Fred L. of Iuka, Kansas; Nancy M. Biddle of Ft. Morgan, Colo.; Hannah E. Parris of Pratt, Kansas; Elijah M. of Cullison, Kansas. Her husband preceded her four years ago.Father and Mother Smith were members of the Church of God for more than 60 years, he being the second elder in the organization of the Church of God in Wooland, W. Va. They moved from West Virginia to Iowa, then to Missouri, then to Kansas. They were pioneers in Kansas, coming to Pratt county in 1885. When the Church of God was organized at Naron by J.N. Smith, his son he and his wife were charter members and he was one of the eldersMother Smith was a consecrated Christian all her life, and died in the faith of the God she so much loved. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Iuka, conducted by Rev. F.L. Rutledge, assisted by Rev. H.T. Purcell, Rev. P.L. French and W.F. Brown , and her body laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Iuka Cemetery. A Friend.
