Colonel Albert W. Campbell, USMC (Retired), died on 9 March 1990. Al, as he was known to his friends, was 71. Born in Abilene, Texas, he grew up in San Diego. Prior to the United States entry into WWII, he served as a Flying Officer in the RCAF. Commissioned in the USMC in May 1942, he was also designated a Naval Aviator.During WWII, Al served with USMC Photographic Squadron VMD-154 at Camp Elrod, Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) in the South Pacific. Following service in VMD-154, he served as plane commander on one of the Marine Corps' first long range executive transports, one of two converted PB4Y-1s. His service included Operations and Logistics billets at various levels including: Marine Corps Air Bases, Marine Air Wing, Marine Division, Marine Corps Development and Education Center, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Directorate. He also commanded a Marine Transport Squadron and a Marine Service Group. His final assignment before retirement was as Chief of Staff, III MAW. Following retirement, he remained active iin woodworking, art, golf, and boating. He was dedicated to the continuation of VMD-154 reunions, and was very proud of the attendance record of crew 5, his crew.Col. Campbell was survived by his wife, Orlean, son, James, and daughter Mrs. Joanne Graham.
