Deceased Name: HUNSAKER, COLONEL BEN WIGHTMAN

Colonel Ben Wightman Hunsaker, Retired, 89, of San Diego, passed away peacefully with his family around his bedside on March 23, 2006. He was the youngest child born to Musetta and Archibald Hunsaker on August 2, 1916.

He married Geraldine Ewing in October of 1940 and soon bought a home in Mission Bay.

He worked for Consolidated as a riveter and then in June 1943, he received his wings and commission in the Army Air Corp. As a trained bomber, he flew 30 missions over Germany. He participated in the Berlin Air Lift and Korean War. He served at the Pentagon and Andrews Air Force Base. His service for his country made him a highly decorated Colonel, earning numerous medals and commendations including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

When he retired, he traveled with his wife and continued his love of flying by joining the local Experimental Aircraft Association (Chapter 14). He was instrumental in securing their location and first hangar at Brown Field and organizing their first fly-in in Ramona. He served a variety of positions in his chapter with great pride.

He is survived by his wife of 65 1/2 years, Geraldine. Son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Claudia Hunsaker of San Marcos, CA. Son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Alicia Hunsaker of Steilacoom, WA. Grandsons David Hunsaker of Annapolis, MD and Dan Hunsaker of San Marcos, CA. Granddaughters Dawn Dalrymple of San Marcos, CA and Kelly Hunsaker of Yelm, WA. Two great grandchildren, Benjamin Dalrymple and Chloe Hunsaker Neuhaus.

Ben's smile, generosity and spirit will be remembered by all those who knew him. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside at 2:30 p.m. All his friends are welcome.
